PORT ARTHUR — Port Arthur’s Bernard “Bun B” Freeman took a break from shooting his latest video to give back to his community.
The hip-hop artist hopped a place and flew back home to meet with fans who donated canned goods at Boost Mobile on Wednesday.
“Some of us have been blessed in this world and when you make it out of a situation you need to remember where you came from,” Freeman said. “I wish this wasn’t just a holiday thing. In reality, there are people who need help every month of the year.”
Jai Kensey, Boost Mobile public relations specialist, said the cell phone company teamed up with the hip-hop artist teamed up for a food drive to benefit the Houston Food bank. Boost Mobile also presented a $5,000 donation to Bethel’s Place, a Houston community development and outreach center.
Fans who donated five or more canned goods received a free ticket to Freeman’s concert taking place Wednesday night at Hush Nightclub in Houston.
Fans Marandle Davis, Tamara Bailey and Janae Broussard posed for photos with the music artist.
“I love him,” Bailey said. “He’s a good role model.”
Port Arthur Mayor Pro Tem Liz Segler was on hand to see the event.
“It’s wonderful he took the time out of his busy schedule to remember Port Arthur and how he got where he is now,” Segler said.
After the Port Arthur stop Freeman headed to Houston for another food drive and was scheduled to return to Atlanta to complete the video, “She Bad.”
Freeman is one half of the Port Arthur hip-hop duo, UGK. His friend and other half of the group, Chad “Pimp C” Butler, died in December 2007.
In March 2008 Freeman shot a video for the song, That’s Gangsta,” in downtown Port Arthur. After the video was completed, the Port Arthur native distributed toys and other items to children at Carver Terrace Apartments.
