Funeral services set for fireman who died off-duty

Firefighters in Port Arthur are dealing with the loss of one of their own.

Steven McShan, 24, died Saturday from injuries he received off-duty during the holiday weekend.

PAFD Capt. and president of the International Associaiotn of Fire Fighters Local No. 397 Perry Manuel said McShan was a friendly guy with a great personality who had a really good work ethic.

“He had lots of friends at the department,” Manuel said. “It’s a strange feeling. Like we’re in a ‘down mode.’ The first day we learned of his death, we were in shick and today, (Tuesday) the second day we are starting to come to terms with his death and we pray for his family.”

According to ABC-Channel 13 in Houston, McShan fell about 40 feet  while trying to climb a balcony at a friend’s home at Crystal Beach Friday night. McShan was reportedly trying to climb to a third level where children were playing when a railing gave way.

Members of the fire department and firefighters union have reached out to the grieving family. PAFD Chief Larry Richard and the union have met with family, he said, and the ladies auxiliary group has met with McShan’s fiance to help console the woman.

“It’s something we’re working through, grieving for our brother,” he said. “He’ll be missed, but never forgotten.”

McShan will have a full firefighters funeral, Manuel added.

Steven Duane McShan, 24, of Lumberton, is a native of Lufkin and longtime resident of Lumberton.

McShan was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed off-roading on ATVs, Jeeps, and other four-wheel drive vehicles.  He did volunteer work for Buckner International, and he especially loved being a firefighter, according to his obituary.

Survivors include his fiancé, Kalyn Layton of Lumberton; parents, Darci and David McShan of Lumberton; brother, Weston McShan of Lumberton; sister, Amber McShan of Lumberton; great-grandmother, Maxine Beard of Lumberton; grandparents, Ruth and R.L. Rogers of Montana, and Donna and Kenneth McShan of Huntington; niece, McKenzie McShan; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

His funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 7 at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont with burial to follow at Old Hardin Cemetery, Kountze.

A gathering of his family and friends will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, at Broussard’s.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial account has been set up in memory of Steven at 5 Point Credit Union, c/o Kalyn Layton, Account #8508342.
