Two people are dead and one is hospitalized after a shooting in Port Arthur that resulted in police pursuing a SUV to Beaumont and fatally shooting the suspect, who displayed a handgun while fleeing on foot.
Port Arthur police responded to a call of multiple gunshots heard at Stonegate Manor Apartments, 4141 Turtle Creek Drive. A black Mitsubishi Montero was seen fleeing the area as officers arrived. Some officers pursued the Mitsubishi while others investigated the scene, discovering that a man and a woman had been shot. One of the victims died.
Port Arthur police pursued the fleeing vehicle to Beaumont where it pulled over at some point to let a woman and infant out. The pursuit continued into Beaumont with Beaumont officers providing assistance. The Mitsubishi came to a stop in the area of Sabine Pass Street at Harrison Street and a man fled the vehicle running west, according to Beaumont police.
Officers chased the man on foot and during the pursuit, the man displayed a handgun, Beaumont police said. A Port Arthur officer fired one round from his handgun, striking the man, who died at the scene.
The man shot in Beaumont is believed to be a 32-year-old Beaumont man, according to Beaumont police. No information was available on the identity of the victims in Port Arthur or the condition of the injured victim.
The woman and infant who exited the fleeing Mitsubishi were picked up by Port Arthur police and transported back to the Port Arthur Police Department for questioning.
The Beaumont Police Department is conducting a joint investigation with the Port Arthur Police Department and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office into the incident, according the a Beaumont Police Department press release. The Port Arthur officer involved in the shooting is a seven-year veteran of the Port Arthur Police Department, the Beaumont Police reported. The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene.
