NISD keeps Cox, Belaire on board; City votes for bond for sewers

NEDERLAND — Two incumbents will remain on the Nederland ISD board of trustees for another term.

Richard Cox and Craig Belaire were the top two vote getters in Saturday’s election with a combined total of 890 votes - 77.8 percent. The men beat out Michelle Stoneham Barnett who received 253 (22 percent) of the 1,143 total votes.

“It feels great,” Belaire said of his win. I appreciate those who turned out to support me for my fourth term. I’m looking forward to all the work being done now with the bond committee in preparation for a possible next November election.”

Belaire said he was appreciative of his family support throughout the election process.

Cox, who is going into this seventh term, said he looks forward to continuing working with Belaire, who he called a “fine young man who’s done a very good job.” He said it seems like just yesterday that he was first elected to the board.

“I thank the community for their support. I’m in awe every time I win that they continue to trust me. I’m appreciative of their confidence in me,” Cox said. “My goal never changes — I want to make sure we provide a good sound education for our kids. It’s just a real pleasure to serve and an honor to do what I do for the kids and the community.”

In the city election, 360 voters (75.6 percent) agreed to the purchase $4.5 million in bonds to replace about 12 miles of sewer line in the city. Only 116 (24.3 percent) of voters cast their votes against the measure.

No city council seats were contested in the election.
