PORT ARTHUR — Mid-County Kindness has set a goal of sending 50 teams to the flooded community of LaBelle, Saturday Oct. 18 while organizers are also encouraging other Mid-County Kindness teams to continue their work in Bridge City.
“LaBelle was hit almost equally hard as Bridge City, though the population and the community are different in size,” organizer Les Hayhurst said. “The pastor of First Baptist LaBelle has been a vocal and a wonderful advocate and we have people still willing to help. The goals are different — 400 homes in La Belle versus 3,200 homes in Bridge City.
“We’re asking new teams to sign up. We’ll have cooking and food and water at the church similar to what we had at the Market Basket (in Bridge City), but on a smaller scale. We just want to give an encouraging word out to the citizens of La Belle.”
Organizers are accepting new teams to sign up by going to www.midcountykindness.com and select the "Teams" tab. To request help, registrants may call the First Baptist Church LaBelle at 796-1240, or log on to www.midcountykindness.com and click on the "Needs" tab.
Organizers will have a staging area at First Baptist Church on FM 365 in LaBelle.
Hayhurst said in addition to homes with “Need Help” signs placed in yards, special needs cases in the community can stop by the church to fill out a form and submit them there. Pastor Bill Fondren will enter the information and requests will go directly to Hayhurst.
The organizers said they are so pleased with how communities have responded to the needs in Southeast Texas. There have been Mid-County Kindness teams on the ground in Bridge City everyday since the Oct. 5 event and they continue to be eager and willing to continue.
