First Friday in Groves gets birthday cake for Big No. 5

GROVES — For 17 years Sue Flores has been piping flourishes on to cakes. Birthdays are her favorite task.

At Bruce’s Market Basket in Groves, she has theme bins of decorations to jazz up with cars, Spider-Man and Hannah Montana themes.

“I love to see the surprise on the children’s faces as they pick up their cakes,” Flores said.

She’s putting the final touches on a big cupcake cake that will go out to First Friday in Groves for turning 5. The affair draws families to downtown Groves for music, contests, shopping and eating.

Flores said 96 cupcakes, united by a sheet of buttercream — or as some people call it, wedding cake frosting — went into the cake Market Basket is donating to the party on Friday.

Bree Babin, First Friday organizer, encouraged the public to come on out for activities scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, April 3, with family events along Lincoln Avenue in downtown Groves. Those with an April 3 birthday will get a gift.

Robin Smith, music specialist with Port Neches Elementary, will bring fourth graders to perform a selection of Texas tunes at 6:30 p.m.

“They are very excited. This is their Texas hoe-down. They’ll be playing recorders and some orff instruments,” Smith said.

She described orff as giant xylophones.

“It’s going to be fun. They’ll be on their western wear,” she said.

Sports Connection will give away a family offer at 8:30 p.m. For information on First Friday, call 962- 3631.
