17-year-old drowns in Sabine River

BURKEVILLE (AP) — Officials have recovered the body of a 17-year-old Louisiana girl who drowned in the Sabine River.

Newton County Sheriff Joe Walker tells Beaumont television station KFDM that the body of Nefertitti Marie Simpson of Shreveport was found Monday morning.

Walker says Simpson and her brother were at the river Sunday with a family friend. He says Simpson was in chest-deep water when she stepped into a drop-off area and was swept away.
