BPD officer on administrative leave after shooting suspect

BEAUMONT — A Beaumont Police Officer is on administrative leave with pay after shooting a suspect in a disturbance Sunday night.

About 11:12 p.m., June 21, officers were dispatched to a home in the 5700 block of Meadowview in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, an officer attempted to detain a male subject who had been involved in the disturbance. The suspect tried to flee on foot.

The officer caught up to the suspect who was then forced to the ground at this time the suspect turned towards the officer and waved a shiny object in his hand, according to a press release from Beaumont Police Department.

After firing two shots at the fleeing suspect, the officer lost sight of the man after the man jumped a wooden fence.

Police began a search near the suspects home and discovered some clothing and a small caliber handgun in the suspects driveway but the suspect was not located.

Early Monday morning about 7:38 a.m., the suspect arrived by private auto at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth emergency room where he was treated and released for a minor gunshot wound to the right arm.

He was transported to the Police Department where underwent questioning.

As per departmental procedure, the officer has been placed on Administrative Leave with pay pending the conclusion of the investigation.
