PORT ARTHUR —
Three mosquitoes taken from a sampling in Port Arthur have tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to Kevin Sexton, mosquito control director for Jefferson County.
Sexton explained that entomologists set out traps in specific areas in the county and the mosquitoes which tested positive for the virus were found at a trap at Grannis Avenue and West Fifth Street.
There have been no animal or human cases of West Nile reported and this is the first time in several years that local mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile.
There are approximately 50 species of mosquitoes in Jefferson County and of those, the public commonly encounters about 12. The Culex, or house mosquito, is the culprit in the case of West Nile virus. These mosquitos are active at night.
“We are asking the public to take extra precaution, use repellent with DEET and try to avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn if possible,” Sexton said.
