NEDERLAND —
Trevor Breaux received an impromptu geography lesson before being handed the keys to a 2012 Toyota Scion Wednesday morning.
The 15-year-old Nederland High School freshman earned the chance at the free car for missing no more than three days of school. Breaux has had perfect attendance for the past two years, he said.
Microphone in hand, the jovial Philpott Motors General Manager Bob Thewman teased eligible students by asking to stand before dismissing them grade level by grade level until he was addressing male freshmen. His clue — “if part of your name is the name of a city” sent a group of teens to the stage eagerly anticipating the outcome and one by one the students were sent away. Thewman changed his strategy a bit and tweaked the clue by asking for those where part of their name is the name of a city in Louisiana and once again a group of students were dismissed.
So Thewman tried one more time by asking for those with the first two initials “T.R” to come forward. Like a game show host, the general manager picked and prodded even asking the teens to name a city in Louisiana.
“Breaux Bridge?,” Breaux answered before admitting he was tipped off that his name contained part of the name of a city in Louisiana.
Besides the keys to the brand new car, Breaux was also presented with a giant check representing a $500 gas card courtesy of Lloyd Varnado of Excel Screen Printing.
“It feels amazing,” Breaux said as worked to address a throng of local media as well as well wishers on stage. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, practice driving maybe.”
Breaux said he doesn’t know if he’ll keep the car or trade it in for a truck as per his father’s advise.
As for Breaux’s advise to other students? “Go to school, you could win a car.”
Nederland ISD and Philpott Motors are in their 10th year of partnership to encourage good attendance.
Six lucky students earned prizes during the ceremony. They include:
