PORT NECHES —
While stopping to pick up his recent purchase of a Farmers Mutual hand crank telephone at The Yellow Rose antique shop, Johnny Davis did a double take.
There, on a small table before him, was a 1950’s era sextant. Davis, a longtime merchant marine, collects such objects and has a room of his Nederland home dedicated to his collection. He already owns an antique ship’s wheel and old models of ships among other items.
Davis spoke with his wife, Cindy Mandeville, about the new purchase while his other family members browsed the shop, marveling at antique glass perfume decanters and snapping photos of an Edison Reproducer — the forerunner to the phonograph.
Ellen Warner, owner of The Yellow Rose, 1303 Port Neches Ave, relocated the shop from Jefferson Drive in Port Arthur about two years ago. During that time she has seen growth along The Avenue.
“I think what we’re doing on The Avenue is really good,” Warner said as crews worked outside the shop resurfacing the street. The city is in the midst of revitalization of the downtown area which began with the infrastructure work/street resurfacing and also includes the construction of a new city hall nearby.
Warner bustled around the shop as her pet dog Possum, a Chinese hairless, kept in close proximity.
“She’s my shop dog, Warner said giving the dog an affectionate pat.
