Groves hears concerns about ‘eye sore’ auto shop

GROVES — Groves residents concerned about what they call an eye sore and traffic hazard addressed Groves City Council on Monday.

Rob Vensel and five people spoke to council during the reports/citizen comments portion of the meeting regarding Boydang Automotive, 2500 Main Ave. Vensel brought with him to the podium paperwork and photographs of the property. He first quoted the city’s ordinance regarding the definition of junk vehicles and said the city intervened in the past by sending a letter to the business owner and the addition of a fence has helped block part of the view of the property.

“As of today we still have problems,” Vensel said.

City Manager D. E. Sosa said the city sent notification to the property owner to clean up the property thus giving the owner to the end of the year to comply.

Sosa and Vensel are aware of environmental issues associated with Boydang’s.

According to an official with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, Boydang’s owner, Duy Nguyen, was issued a notice of violation in February. An agree to order was then issued and mailed on Nov. 7 and Nguyen has until Jan. 7 to comply with TCEQ regarding allegations of improperly handled used motor oil.

Other residents voiced concerns for a nearby business that abuts Main Avenue but where vehicles allegedly use Dave Street, which is a residential neighborhood, to test drive vehicles etc.

Dennis Diltz, Harold Guidry, Troy Bazar, Jack Riley and Wayne Taylor also express concerned regarding the two businesses and their practices and of the dangers to the neighborhood.

The issues were on the agenda for discussion only and will be placed on the agenda for the Dec. 17 meeting for discussion.
