Port Arthur Fire Department responded to a call of a fire on a ship in the Sabine-Neches waterway Wednesday afternoon.
Port Arthur Fire Capt. Troy Irvine said that about 2 p.m. some welders were working in the cargo hold of the Charleston, a chemical tanker docked at Gulf Copper in the 2000 block of South Gulfway Drive, when the fire began.
There was no product in the hold and investigators believe either rust or metal flakes became ignited during the welding process.
All personnel working in the hold were evacuated and water was pumped onto the fire. The blaze was extinguished by the time PAFD arrived, he said.
There were no injuries reported.
