Coast Guard gets lesson in doggy daycare

PORT ARTHUR — Members of Marine Safety Unit-Port Arthur got a special lesson in dog walking from the Humane Society on Wednesday, in preparation for their Mardi Gras parade appearance next weekend.

When Chief Warrant Officer Faith Matuschek was transferred to MSU Port Arthur in October of 2011, she was forced to leave her Lhasa Apso puppy at home in Jacksonville, Fla.

“I am here on temporary duty,” she said, while standing over the lab-pit mix Coco. “Maybe this will help keep me from missing my dog.”

The members of the U.S. Coast Guard signed up for the volunteer work in addition to their normal duties.

“I wanted to do some volunteer work for the community but when I realized there were dogs involved I was all in,” added Matuschek.
