Beaumont electrician gets probation for tax fraud

BEAUMONT — A Southeast Texas electrician has been placed on probation for five years and must pay restitution of more than $660,000 after pleading guilty to tax fraud.

Calvin Gary Walker was accused of overbilling the Beaumont school district nearly $1.6 million and failing to pay federal income taxes.

U.S. District Judge Ron Clark in Beaumont sentenced Walker on Wednesday. Walker entered in a plea agreement in July a week before he was set for a retrial.

A federal jury last year couldn’t reach a verdict on charges that Walker submitted fraudulent invoices related to electrical wiring jobs at two Beaumont Independent School District campuses.

Walker could have received a year in prison.
