DeQuincy, LA — Mary “Johnnie” Burns, 84, of DeQuincy, Louisiana passed away at High Hope Nursing Home in Sulphur, Louisiana.
Mary was born on February 26, 1926, in Port Arthur, Texas to Carrie Plaia DiGirolamo and Thomas DiGirolamo. She had lived in Port Arthur from 1926 to 1959, Nederland from 1959-69, Jasper from 1969-95 and DeQuincy from 1995 until 2010. Mary was a secretary for the Doctor’s Clinic in Jasper for many years and was a member of the Catholic faith. She loved to work in her garden, cook; crochet and sew, do ceramics and oil paintings and spend time with her family.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Jean Peterson and her husband Jeff of DeQuincy, Louisiana and Sandra Harding and her husband Claude of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew Peterson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Justin Gaspard and his wife Andi and their son, Grayson and Kevin Ambrose all of Austin, Texas; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Maranto and Rose Cappadonna; brother, Frank Girolamo.
A gathering of friends and family will take place from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur. A Chapel Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves, Texas.
In lieu of flowers “Memorial Contributions” can be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the American Cancer Society at 755 South 11th Street, Beaumont, TX 77701.
