PORT ARTHUR —
Sam Joseph Mordente, Sr., 81, of Port Arthur, Texas, died Sunday, January 22, 2012, at his home in Port Arthur where he relocated to in 2007 from Alvin, Texas. He was born on May 12, 1930, to the late Paul and Eunice Mordente in Chicago, Illinois. He was reared by his grandmother Mary in New Orleans. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio operator and then worked as a self-employed electronic technician until his retirement. Tinkering with computers and electronics was a favorite pastime of his; however, talking on his ham radio, original license #K5HXY and presently #N5REB was his greatest passion. His love for birds led him to raising homing pigeons and finches in his younger days. As he aged, he enjoyed listening to opera and classical music and watching old and new movies.
Sam is preceded in death by his parents and a son, Sam Mordente, Jr. in 1991.
He is survived by his five sons and two daughters: Neil Surgi and wife Gloria Ruffin of Spring, Darrell Surgi and wife Michelle Bruno of Port Arthur, Paul Mordente of League City, David Mordente of Cold Springs, Stephen Mordente and partner Shari Taylor of League City, Mary M. Fuchs and husband Patrick of Angleton, Christina Mordente of Missouri City and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Stephen McCrate officiating.
Cremation services are under the direction of Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home, Port Arthur.
