Pat Edward Johnson, 78, of Nederland, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2013, after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Broussard’s in Nederland, with Reverend Clyde Drake officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, in Port Neches.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Friday evening at Broussard’s.
Pat was born in Port Neches on August 17, 1934, and a lifelong resident of Nederland.
Pat was a 1951 graduate of Nederland High School, graduate of Wharton Junior College, Lamar University and completed his Master’s at Stephen F. Austin. He excelled in high school and college athletics and started his coaching career in 1959, at Nederland High School, which led to Head Coach and Athletic Director until 1971, when he left coaching to join State Farm Insurance.
Pat was a member of First Baptist Church in Nederland, but was a guest at several other churches.
Pat was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Gertie, for sixty years.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Johnson; and brothers, Mac and Donny Johnson.
Pat is survived by four children, Patrick Johnson of Austin, Jeffrey Johnson of Arlington, Tracey Johnson of Baytown and Karen Johnson Frederick and her husband, John, of Nederland; two grandchildren, Julie Frederick White and Blake Edward Gonzales; and one great-granddaughter, Ireland White.
Also survived by his sister, Patsy Johnson of Nederland; two brothers, Mike Johnson and his wife, Kay of Greer, South Carolina and Jerry Johnson and his wife, Elaine, of Kingwood; and several nieces, nephews, and hundreds of friends.
Pat loved football, fishing, the beach, grandchildren, being with family and friends, traveling, and always looked forward to his annual fish fry with his buddies, but above all, Pat’s wife, Gertie, was the light of his life.
