Editorial: Campus ratings show big improvement in PAISD

PORT ARTHUR — The Port Arthur school district received strong evidence Friday it is on the right course for improved student performance, a dramatic turnaround for a district that just two years ago had five campuses rated academically unacceptable.

The School Accountability ratings released Friday by the Texas Education Agency show the district now has no campuses performing at an unacceptable level. On the contrary, the district had four campuses operating at a “Recognized” status, with the others rated “Academically Acceptable.”

School administrators say the foundations are being laid for continued gains in student performance, citing double digit improvements in key areas on the state’s tests.

Student performance may be the most important area of improvement for the school district, but its sound financial footing is also a dramatic turnaround from recent history.

Despite the weakness of the economy, the PAISD has managed it financial affairs in such a manner that it is now in the position of considering $1,700 salary hikes for teachers. It stands to reason that increasing pay for teachers will make the district more competitive in the marketplace for teachers. That should mean even more qualified, certified teachers in the classrooms which should translate into even better student performance.

In addition to improved academics and finances, the bond building program is continuing to visibly improve the district’s facilities throughout the city.  The new and rebuilt schools are a testament to the importance the entire community is placing on educating Port Arthur’s students.

Only a few weeks of summer are left before students and teachers will return to the classrooms. As they do the district’s patrons can know that their investment has begun paying dividends. The teachers and administrators have evidence that their work is paying off.

Dr. Mark Porterie, deputy superintendent, said the leadership team met Friday and celebrated the progress, but the goal has not yet been reached. That goal is to be rated “Exemplary.” The evidence shows the district on the right path to achieve that goal.
