Seahawks lose to South Plains

MIDLAND —  MIDLAND — A day after beating the No. 8 team in the nation, the Lamar State College-Port Arthur was dealt its first loss of the season in a 81-68 loss to South Plains College at the Midland College Classic on Saturday.

The Seahawks, now 4-1 for the season, fell behind early by as many as 10 points but recovered to tie the game with 2:25 left in the first half. It appeared the giant killers from Port Arthur would take down another nationally-ranked team during their trip to Midland.

The Cowboys, ranked No. 18 and now 4-0 for the year, picked up the pace again, retaking the lead before the end of the first half, heading into the break with a five-point advantage.

That lead continued to build as the second half started with LSC-PA falling behind by as many as 19 during a 15-1 run in the first seven minutes of the half.

The Seahawks battled but could only close the gap to within seven points.

Shondel Stewart led the Seahawks with 21 points, six rebounds and two steals while Brandon Peters scored 12 with four boards. Derrick Dawkins hit for 10 points and Elridge Moore had nine.

Marshall Henderson paced the Cowboys with 34 points.

The Seahawks return to Port Arthur for a set of games during Homecoming Week at the college, taking on Lone Star College-Tomball on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Parker Center.

Friday, the Seahawks Invitational begins with LSC-PA playing Baton Rouge Community College at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Seahawks take on Texas Southern JV at 2 p.m.  with homecoming festivities taking place inside the Parker Center starting at 12:30 p.m.
