MHS teacher hopes to re-launch school newspaper

PORT ARTHUR — Jerrilynn Miller would like to see a school newspaper in operation again at Memorial High School. So badly in fact, she recently gained admission to the Reynolds Institute for journalism teachers to learn “a strong grounding in how to produce a quality scholastic newspaper.”

“The American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE) sponsors the event every summer at three different universities,” Miller said. “It’s very competitive. Out of 300 applicants, only less than 150 are chosen to attend. I wanted to apply last year, but I couldn’t get the essay, application and resume together. This year, I sat down and made myself do it.”

Teachers write a two-page essay on why they should be an attendee at the event. Miller will attend the ASNE Reynolds High School Journalism Institute Fellow at the University of Nevada-Reno from July 15-27.

MHS had a newspaper the first year the school came into existence, but it only published four times that year. Miller hopes after completing the institute, it will catapult the launching of a new MHS paper.

“We need a newspaper on this campus. A place to let student voices be heard,” she said. “We haven’t had the funding in recent years, but the new administration is high school friendly.”

She added students working for the paper on-site will gain valuable experience.

“We’re interested in students doing lots of activities that they can devote their time to. Productive activities that lead to future careers. Maybe some internships with local media, or in photography, or public relations,” Miller said.

The institute’s Web site reads, “During the two weeks of training, competitively selected newspaper advisers will be steeped in journalistic practices and responsibilities, ethical decision making and press freedom issues. ASNE’s recruitment includes intensive outreach to schools in urban and rural areas where journalism programs are most under stress.”

Miller said she “encourages any area teacher to apply.”
