BEAUMONT – Quarterback Chris Clack sparked the offense and the Bruins defense made one final stand in the closing minute as West Brook held on for a 26-19 win over Central Friday night at the Thomas Center.
Diego Uribe’s second field goal of the game gave the Bruins a 26-19 lead with 7:00 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars mounted a final drive to tie the game. Central converted a key third down when Robert Mitchell connected with Trent Samuels on a 9-yard gain.
The Bruins were called for a personal foul, late hit, on an incomplete pass on third-and-12 to keep the Jaguars drive alive. Damon Thomas-Garrett rushed for 8 yards on a third-and-one to the WB 27. Robert Mitchell hit brother Garrison Mitchell on an 8-yard completion on third-and-six to the 15.
Robert Mitchell had runs of 3 and 6 yards to the Bruins 6. Mitchell was stopped for a 1-yard loss on third-and-one and was sacked for a 22-yard loss to turn the ball over on downs to WB with 31 seconds left in the game.
Clack replaced starter Devin Padia on the Bruins second possession and completed 7-of-14 passes for 122 yards. Justin Hervey led all rushers with 95 yards on 18 carries. Stephen Wycoff added 70 yards on seven totes and Cameron McBride had eight carries for 35 yards.
Already leading 20-7, WB opened the third quarter by adding to its lead. Uribe capped a 7-play drive with a 25-yard field goal to make the score 23-7.
Central (0-2) took advantage of a Bruin turnover for its first points of the third quarter. WB tried a reverse, but James Reed fumbled the pitch and the Jaguars Chris Brooks scooped up the ball and raced 29 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 23-13.
The Jaguars pulled within a score early in the fourth quarter. Thomas-Garrett capped off an 8-play, 80-yard drive with a 19-yard scoring run to make the score 23-19. The big play on the drive was a 38-yard completion from Robert Mitchell to Nicalus Rhone.
Mitchell finished the game 13-of-22 for 218 yards passing. Garrison Mitchell had six catches for 85 yards.
LaDarious Spearman put the Bruins on the board first on a 65-yard touchdown reception from Clack. The drive was set up when WB blocked a 26-yard field goal attempt by Nicalus Rhone.
It didn’t take long for the Jaguars to answer. Thomas-Garrett returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown to even the score at 7-7 with 44 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
WB (1-1) scored on its second consecutive possession. Stephen Wycoff capped a 6-play drive with a 28-yard scoring run. Diego Uribe’s extra-point was wide right. Wycoff also had a 9-yard run on the drive and Clack hit Hervey for an 11-yard gain.
After the two teams exchanged turnovers midway through the second quarter, the Bruins went on a long, sustained drive that was aided when punter Uribe went around right end for eight yards for a first down on fourth-and-six.
Wycoff followed with an 18-yard run and Hervey picked up 11 and eight yards on consecutive carries. McBride carried for 12 yards to the 1 and followed with a 1-yard plunge to give the Bruins a 20-7 lead with 5:07 remaining in the first half.
Central threatened to score right before the end of the half. On fourth-and-14 from the WB 41, Robert Mitchell hit Garrison Mitchell for a 40-yard gain to the 1. With no timeouts remaining and :08 showing on the clock, Robert Mitchell tried a quarterback sneak. He was stopped short to end the half.
