Nederland loses to Dayton in scrimmage

DAYTON — Injuries hit the Nederland football team hard in a 31-14 loss in Dayton in the second and final scrimmage of the preseason.

At least four different Nederland starters had preexisting minor injuries aggravated in the game or were hurt in the first half. Receiver Colton Kimler got hit in the chin on the scrimmage’s first play, while Brock Pryor, Brandon Dial and Jordan Wood all left with nagging injuries.

“We didn’t move forward in all the areas we wanted to,” Nederland head coach Larry Neumann said.

Michael Shaw provided both of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns.

The speedy receiver turned a bubble screen into a 70-yard touchdown and then caught a Carson Raines pass on a deep post route for another long TD.

“I felt like at halftime, the wheels had come off,” Neumann said.

“If you’re looking for a positive, it’s that the guys came back in the second half and really showed some courage. That went to their character and I think once we look at the film, that’ll be born out.”

Nederland was already dealing with injuries, forcing a shuffling of the offensive line. Part of that saw tight end De Shawn Washington switching over to right tackle, but with Pryor’s injury, Washington went back to defense. He just didn’t play his usual end position, instead moving down to tackle.

“You know, that’s not what we planned to do, but De Shawn did a great job for us,” Neumann said.

In recent seasons, Nederland has had a history of damaging injuries during the season, but Neumann said he doesn’t remember it hitting all at one or quite this soon.

“I can’t imagine we’ve ever been this bad off physically as early in the season as we are right now,” Neumann said. “We’ll come out in our meetings this weekend and evaulate where everyone is at. I anticipate we’ll probably have to make a few changes before next week’s game against Crosby, but what those are, I don’t know right now.”
