PORT ARTHUR —
David Hill has added to the staff of the Port Arthur Memorial football team, Hill and head coach Kenny Harrison confirmed Tuesday. Hill will be the new inside linebackers coach, taking over for Mark Crooms, who left to take a job in the Houston area.
Hill’s hiring was confirmed last Thursday at a school board meeting.
“This is where I wanted to be,” Hill said. “It’s a blessing for me. I get to be closer to my parents and family. I’ve just been very impressed by the staff they have here already and am looking forward to coaching here.”
Hill’s last coaching stop was at Hillsboro from 2006-2008. After that season, he retired from coaching and entered the oil and gas industry as a landman. The opportunity at Memorial not only gave him a chance to get back into coaching, but it gave him a chance to settle down a bit.
“I was a landman, and as part of that job, you move around a lot,” Hill said. “I found after I retired that I missed coaching an awful lot. Port Arthur is really where I wanted to be. When I had an opportunity to get back into coaching here, I jumped at it.”
Hill’s father, Smitty, coached at Port Arthur Jefferson from 1956 through 1972. He was head coach from ’66 through ’72, compiling a 54-11-3 record and taking the 1980 Yellow Jackets to the state semifinals. The younger Hill was also on the TJ coaching staff, as offensive line and defensive line coach when Harrison was on the team in the early ‘90s.
“His coaching experience will be a big asset,” Harrison said. “We’re looking forward to him coming in. I remember him as a hard-nosed coach and I think he’ll bring that style to our team.”
Crooms took a job with C.E. King as a position coach.
