Depwe hoops dinner Saturday at Holiday Inn

PORT ARTHUR — Though basketball season has been over for a while yet, it’s not too late to honor the best players at different positions from last season. That’s exactly what will happen Saturday night at the Holiday Inn in Port Arthur, as the Raymond Depwe Basketball Awards are announced.

Three players will be honored out of the 11 finalists for the Mr. Inside, Mr. Outside and Swingman of the Year. Mid- and South-County will be well-represented, as two Nederland boys players made the cut for finalists with one of Memorial’s boys joining them.

Sophomore forward Colton Weisbrod and junior point guard Zach English led the Bulldogs to another trip to the regional quarterfinals this season. Both players were named first team all-district in 20-4A, with Weisbrod taking home Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Weisbrod averaged 16.5 points per game with 8.1 rebounds per game, shooting 55 percent from the field in 38 games. English scored 12.5 points per game with 5.1 assists per game and 1.5 steals per game. The junior also shot 48 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line.

Senior Donovan Ford proved a galvanizing force for a young Memorial team, leading them into the area round of the playoffs.

Ford shared the back court with two sophomores for the Titans, with a freshman also getting significant playing time in the front court.

Other finalists include Chris Elam, a junior guard from Silsbee, Jordan Holmes, a junior guard from Silsbee, Kelton Gaines, a senior guard from Silsbee, West Brook’s Keenan Banks, Corey Cooper and Charlie Adkins, Central senior forward Kristain Smith and Kountze’s Laramine Linn.

Two notable absences from the list were Hardin-Jefferson’s Shawn Prudhomme, who averaged 24.5 points per game in leading the Hawks to a school-record 39 victories. Prudhomme was named District 21-3A MVP this season.

Another Memorial player also could become a perennial finalist for this award. Freshman center Dorian Chatman was one of the most dominant defensive players in the area, playing big minutes for a playoff team.
