COLLEGE STATION — The Port Arthur Memorial 7 on 7 team won three straight games to open the consolation bracket of the Division I state championships Saturday, before falling to eventual state champ Tyler John Tyler 51-14 in the semifinals.
Memorial beat Weslaco 25-20 in the first round, Fort Bend Elkins 28-27 in the second round and Arlington 39-30 in the third.
John Tyler beat San Antonio O’Conner 49-28 in the finals held at Kyle Field.
In the championship bracket, Plano defeated Manvel 45-28 to win the Division I state championship.
John Tyler had four interceptions in the game with Darion Flowers and Isaac Warren returning theirs for touchdowns consecutively to end the game.
District rival La Porte made it to the championship bracket Saturday, beating Whitehouse 26-20 and Plano West 36-33 before falling in the third round to Abilene 40-28.
The Bulldogs had gone 3-1 in pool play to reach the championship bracket.
