BEAUMONT —
Nederland senior defensive end Koby Couron and Beaumont Central quarterback Robert Mitchell both committed to Lamar University on Sunday.
Couron had 86 tackles, including 29 for a loss, 14 sacks, three pass breakups and one forced fumble last season. The senior was also named to the Associated Press Class 4A all-state second team, named first-team all-district and made the Port Arthur News Super Team.
Couron was similarly decorated in his junior season, when he helped the Bulldogs to the regional round of the playoffs and played across from current Lamar defensive lineman Corbin Carr.
Mitchell, a three-year starter for the Jaguars, completed 134 of 236 passes for 1,794 yards and 13 touchdowns with six interceptions last season. The dual threat QB also rushed for 503 yards and 10 TDs last season and was named co-Offensive Player of the Year in District 20-4A.
Mitchell suffered through an injury-plagued junior season, but still managed to rush for 440 yards and five TDs.
The two join Port Arthur Memorial athlete Ricky Fisk as local players committed to the Cardinals.
National signing day is on February 6.
