Memorial trio set for Bayou Bowl

PORT ARTHUR —   BAYTOWN — Three Port Arthur Memorial players will get to continue their high school careers for one more game this weekend as part of the 10th annual Bayou Bowl, held in Baytown’s Stallworth Stadium at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Linebackers Davonte McMillian and Elandon Roberts will join defensive back Jaylon Howard in the contest. It marks the second straight week McMillian will be playing an all-star game, as he was named the defensive MVP for the East squad in the Southeast Texas Ford Dealers All-Star Classic at Lamar’s Provost Umphrey Stadium last Saturday. McMillian had eight tackles and half a sack against the West.

The three will be suiting up against a team of Louisiana all-stars, as the Bayou Bowl pits recently graduated seniors from the Houston area against players from all over the state of Louisiana. The three Titans will be joined by former 21-5A foes like Channelview quarterback Averion Hurts, along with Falcon receivers Stanley Wesley and Marquis Johnson.

The Texas team will be led by La Marque head coach Mike Jackson. Joining his staff are seven others with head coaching experience, including current head coaches like Cinco Ranch’s Don Clayton, Dickinson’s John Snelson,  Alvin’s Trey Herrmann and Team Texas football director and Deer Park head coach Chris Massey.

Former Oak Ridge head coach Bob Barrett will be the special teams coach while the rest of the staff is filled out by coaches on Jackson’s La Marque staff or Snelson’s Dickinson staff.

Texas is 5-4 in the past nine years in the game, but Louisiana comes in on a one-game winning streak. The Louisiana all-stars won 30-23 last season, snapping a three-year streak of Texas victories, including a record 42-point outburst in 2010 by the Texas team.

The Louisiana all-stars are led by Donaldsonville head coach Terence Williams. Donaldsonville is south of Baton Rouge and about 300 miles from Baytown.

Other notable players on the Texas squad are Wheatley defensive back Xavier Howard, who was honorable mention all-state, La Marque running back Tim Wright, who rushed for over 4,000 yards and over 50 touchdowns over the past two seasons, and Lamar signee Michael Handy, a wide receiver from Oak Ridge.
