Jimmy Stroud’s trip to South Carolina won’t be in vain.
Two hours from Kiawah Island Wednesday, Stroud’s son Chris called to tell him he was officially in the field for the 94th PGA Championship being played at Kiawah’s Ocean Course. When his son started the week as first alternate, Jimmy gambled that he would get in and began the 12-hour drive with his brother Joey.
“It was such a relief when Christopher called,” said the elder Stroud. “I was thinking and hoping that he’d get in, but there were no guarantees.”
Stroud gained entry into the field when Ben Crane was forced to withdraw with a back injury. It had been reported in Wednesday’s Port Arthur News that Crane was probably going to be the one who opened a spot for Stroud. He had withdrawn with back problems on the sixth hole of the third round of last week’s Bridgestone Invitational.
Stroud will move into Crane’s 8:20 a.m. tee time on Thursday with Marty Jertson and Thongchai Jaidee. His Friday tee time is 1:30 p.m.
This will be the fifth major and first PGA Championship for Stroud. He previously qualified his way into four U.S. Opens. He is currently No. 83 on the PGA Tour money list with $883,194 in earnings, No. 92 in Fed Ex Cup points and No. 166 in the world rankings.
Contrary to earlier reports, Stroud was allowed to practice on the Ocean Course before he was an official entry into the field. He managed to get in nine holes on the Ocean Course Tuesday and, weather permitting, planned to play at least the other nine on Wednesday.
