PORT ARTHUR —
Though their seasons have been over for a while now, there are plenty of area basketball players who were honored on their all-district teams this season.
Port Arthur Memorial’s Paulletta Powell took home the highest honor, being named Co-Most Valuable Player for the girls’ District 21-5A. Powell was joined on the superlative list by teammate Chaterra Cage, who was named Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Kevin Henry, who was named Co-Coach of the Year.
Memorial’s Ariel Hutchinson and Velma Brown were both named to the first team, meaning four out of the Lady Titans’ starting five were honored on the first team or higher. Jasmine Taylor was named to the second team while freshman Joyce Kennerson, senior Ashlyn Tage, junior Crystal Sallier, junior Loren Evans, junior Dorcieve Davis and junior Summer Harris all received honorable mentions.
North Shore’s Courtney Williams, one of the top recruits in the state, shared MVP honors with Powell while North Shore head coach Allison Campbell shared the top coaching spot with Henry. Beaumont West Brook sophomore Monii Jackson was named Newcomer of the Year.
In District 20-4A, Nederland’s Colton Weisbrod won Offensive Player of the Year. The sophomore led his team to a third consecutive district title and into the third round of the playoffs. Teammates Zach English and Jared Lorimier both made the first team while Jamiere Rogers made the second team. All four players will be back next season for Nederland.
Port Neches-Groves senior Jayce Nelson was named to the first team, marking the second sport where Nelson was so honored. He also made first team for the Indian football team. Teammate Brandon Pham was named to the second team.
Central senior Kristian Smith was named the 20-4A MVP while Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Jordan Wells was named Defensive Player of the Year. Central swept the remaining superlatives, as freshman E’Torrion Wilridge was named Newcomer of the Year and Robert Lee was named Coach of the Year.
Dorian Chatman, the 6-foot-6 freshman from Port Arthur Memorial, was named District 21-5A Newcomer of the Year. Teammates Torian Lott and Donovan Ford both made the first team, while senior Tre’Von Armstead and sophomore Albert Jacobs were both named to the second team. Roderic Rucker also got a honorable mention nod.
North Shore’s Johnathan Motley was named district MVP while Channelview’s Darins Jones and North Shore’s Ryan Victor were named Co-Defensive Player of the Year. La Porte senior Rashad Washington was named Offensive Player of the Year while North Shore’s David Green took Coach of the Year.
On the girls’ side, Nederland’s Kelsey Beard made the 20-4A first team while teammate Kinsey Miller was named to the second team. PN-G’s only representative was Ryanne Lunceford on the second team.
Central’s Malena Washington was named MVP with Ozen’s Asia Booker getting Offensive MVP and teammate Bealoved Brown taking Defensive MVP. Tammy Walker-Brown won Coach of the Year for the Lady Panthers.
