Lady Titans roll on into 5A playoffs

HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS ROUNDUP

BAYTOWN — The Port Arthur Memorial girls keep winning in District 21-5A. It paid off Friday as the Lady Titans clinched a playoff spot with a 73-27 victory over Baytown Sterling, their sixth in a row in district play.

Memorial (18-8, 6-1) outscored Sterling 41-5 combined in the first and third quarters to pull away. Pauletta Powell led the way for the Lady Titans with 11 points while Ariel Hutchinson and Chaterra Cage each had 9 points.

Teammates Crystal Sallier, Loren Evans and Velma Brown each had 8 points. Lacy Crenshaw led Sterling with 7 points.

The Lady Titans will travel to North Shore at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Memorial boys hold on to beat Sterling

The Port Arthur Memorial boys basketball team overcame a 3-point halftime deficit to beat Baytown Sterling 62-60 on Friday in District 20-4A play.

The Titans (13-11, 3-2) finished the first half of district play in third place behind North Shore and Channelview.

Freshman Dorian Chatman and senior Donovan Ford each had 17 points for Memorial, while Sterling got 22 points out of Bralon Evans.

Memorial will host North Shore at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Nederland sweeps Mid-County Madness

PORT NECHES — The Nederland girls basketball team beat Port Neches-Groves 46-30 Friday at the PN-G Competition Gym.

Nederland (5-14, 2-9 in 20-4A) will host Livingston at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday while PN-G (8-19, 0-11) will play at Lumberton.
