They remain the District 38-4A boys soccer champions unless Nederland should prove otherwise.
That means Port Neches-Groves enters into a playoff mode of sorts this weekend.
The Indians complete their regular season Tuesday night at Bulldog Stadium, playing the Bulldogs for the boys district title. And that one will have its own special atmosphere.
Fifteen seniors wrapped up their ‘‘post-season preparations” on Indian Stadium’s Senior Night by letting a tall, red-headed junior handle the early proceedings.
Trey Keyes knocked home two of PN-G’s three first-half goals. Senior co-captain Isaac Addison added two later and sophomore midfielder Brant Dykes contributed a second-half goal in the 5-1 victory over Hamshire-Fannett.
PN-G, 18-5-3 and 11-1-1, is headed toward a winner-take-all visit to Nederland and Tribe’s first-year head coach Chad Luttrull likes it that way.
“That’s really a great game to have right before the playoffs because it gets everyone in that playoff mindset before the post-season,” Luttrull said. “Whoever wins is going to be crowned. If PN-G wins, PN-G’s the district champion and if Nederland wins, Nederland’s the district champion.”
The Indians dominated shots on goal, 16-2, on Senior Night. They received a great performance from their consistent sweeper, junior Mason Stewart.
By serving as the last line of defense in front of freshman goalkeeper Bryce Meche, Stewart enabled Meche’s business to a minimum. The Indians keeper only had one save.
Hamshire-Fannett’s only goal came on a second-half penalty kick.
