Indians eliminate Baytown Lee in two games

BAYTOWN —  After riding his right arm to a win Wednesday, Aaron Graham went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs batted in to lead Port Neches-Groves to a 12-5 win over Baytown Lee Saturday afternoon at Ronnie Kluch Field.

The Indians, who improved to 25-3 on the season and won its 17th consecutive game, completed the two-game sweep of the Ganders following their 6-0 win on Wednesday. PN-G will now face Montgomery in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.

“We came out early and scored a few runs and that always helps,” said PN-G coach Mark Brevell. “You can relax a little bit and it helps your pitcher when you get a few runs early. That’s what we did today.

“Jayce (Nelson) was throwing great and I didn’t want to pull him out. I wanted him to go finish it because his mechanics looked great still. His pitch count was pretty low and he was still throwing great. He talked me out of pulling him the first time I went to the mound but when he hit the second batter I had to go get him.”

PN-G jumped out to a quick lead with three runs in the first inning and another run in the second. Grant Guidry was hit by a pitch from Lee starter Justin Barker to get things started in the first. Jayce Nelson walked and Graham followed with an RBI single to left center field.

Colton Ward, who was 3-for-5 with two RBI, followed with a single to right field to drive in Nelson. Kaleb Clark drove in Ward with a double down the right field line to give the Indians a 3-0 lead.

Daniel Sparrow walked to lead off the second inning and stole second. He advanced to third on Nelson’s single to left field to put runners on the corners. The Indians executed a double steal with Sparrow scoring to give PN-G a 4-0 lead.

The Indians kept the pressure on by scoring three more runs in the fourth inning. Sparrow, Guidry and Nelson drew consecutive walks to load the bases, which spelled the end of the day for Barker. Graham greeted reliever Robert Trevino with a 2-run single to center field. Ward followed with an RBI single to right to put the Indians up 7-0.

Dylan Saatzer was hit by a pitch and scored on Guidry’s 2-out double down the left field line to make the score 8-0.

PN-G put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh inning. Chase Bertrand led off the inning with a double to the wall in left field. Sparrow singled to left and the Indians again perfectly executed a double steal with Bertrand beating the return throw to home plate.

Guidry, Nelson and Graham each followed with an RBI double to give the Indians a 12-0 lead. Guidry went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and Nelson went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. As a team, the Indians pounded out 14 hits.

“I was seeing the ball well. They were pitching the ball real low and I was just trying to go opposite field,” said Graham. “I widened my stance a little today and tried to two-strike approach the ball all day.”

Nelson picked up the win for the Indians and was cruising until he ran out of gas in the bottom of the seventh inning. He pitched six and one-third innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Nelson retired 10 straight batters before the leadoff guy in seventh reached on a hit. Logan Ashworth came in to record the final two outs, allowing one run on two hits.

Lee (12-16) rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch-hitter Davon Eastman led off the inning by reaching on a bad-hop single to shortstop. Michael Gomez followed with a double down the left field line.

Roberto Vasquez was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Gabriel Ramos followed by also getting hit by a pitch, which ended the day for Nelson and drove in Eastman with the Ganders first run of the game and the two-game series.

Connor Pitkin drove in a run on a fielder’s choice in what could have been a game-ending double play, but Saatzer mishandled the throw at second base. Hunter Waldie followed with an RBI single and Aaron Garcia closed out the scoring with a 2-run single down the right field line to make the final score 12-5.
