The Memorial Titans are one win from sealing up a second straight District 21-5A championship. Counting tonight's 7 p.m. matchup with West Brook in Port Arthur, there are three games left in district play. Memorial owns a two game lead over second place North Shore and have beat the Mustangs twice this season.
A win tonight will put Memorial at 8-0 in the league standings and even back-to-back losses to finish out the season won't keep the Titans, who beat Baytown Sterling Friday to improve their 2009-10 record to 23-2, from claiming another championship.
If history is on Memorial's side, West Brook is unlikely to pose much of a threat tonight. The Titans are 2-0 against the Bruins this season and lit them up in their first district meeting, 89-50, in Beaumont.
Memorial finishes out the campaign with a trip to Channelview on Friday and then will host Baytown Lee next Tuesday.
In other prep basketball around the area, the Nederland Bulldogs picked up a crucial win on Friday, defeating the Central Jaguars 46-41 to move to 8-3 and take sole possession of second place in District 20-4A. That win also clinched a playoff spot for the Dogs, the second straight season to do so.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Bulldogs (15-14 overall) will be trying to put an end to a current win-one, lose-one trend tonight when they host the Livingston Lions (7-4 in league play) at 7:30.
Nederland scored 35 points in the fourth quarter of the last meeting to turn a 10-point deficit into a 66-56 victory at Livingston. The Dogs, who were led by Dionte Forney and Chris Cunningham's 18 points in that game, will finish out the regular season at Vidor on Friday and then host Lumberton on next Tuesday.
Also in 20-4A, the Port Neches-Groves Indians fell to 4-7 in disstrict play with Friday's 47-43 loss in Vidor. The Tribe has lost four straight. In that span, the Indians have been knocked out of the playoffs, as Livingston owns tiebreakers against PN-G and LC-M after beating both teams last week.
The Indians will square off with Lumberton tonight at the Reservation, then finish at Ozen (10-1) and at home against Central (7-4).
In local girls' basketball, the Lady Indians (3-10) are now out of the playoffs with their Friday loss to Vidor (4-9). PN-G still has a hand in how District 20-4A wraps up this season, as it travels to Lumberton (5-8) tonight for the finale. Lumberton is tied with LC-M for the district's final postseason bid.
Meanwhile, the Lady Bears travel to Vidor to finish out the season, meaning the district could end with a three-way tie. Also in league play, the Lady Bulldogs (2-11) travel to Livingston tonight where they will take on the the third place Lady Lions (10-3).
