NEDERLAND -- When a soccer writer recently asked about the real carburetor in this 2010 Nederland offense, Bulldogs coach Jason Butler countered with an unexpected answer.
The writer thought that carburetor might have been senior forward Jordan O'Neill.
"I really think Hector Garcia is the one who gets us going," the Nederland coach said.
The senior forward Garcia got the Bulldogs going Tuesday night in Bulldog Stadium because he never quit.
Garcia pounded in a deflection about 12 minutes into the second half as Nederland delivered a memorable 1-0 Bulldog Stadium shutout, handing Port Neches-Groves its first loss of the season.
Nederland (11-1-1 and 5-0) dominated the offense in this one, owning at least a 25-8 lead in shots on goal. PN-G (12-1-3 and 4-1) received another superb performance from sophomore goalkeeper Micah Murdock to keep the game as close as it was.
"We won a lot of ball in the air tonight," Butler said. "I thought we were quicker and faster to the ball a lot of times. Our midfielders moved the ball around and we found a lot of open spaces. We took the ball down the sidelines well."
Indians chief Don Sandell praised his own defense as well as the ability of Nederland's playmakers.
"I thought our defense did an admirable job," Sandell said. "Nederland counters so quickly. Their attack is so relentless. They probably out-possessed us by at least a 2 to 1 margin."
The night's lone goal developed after junior midfielder Chris Roebuck pounded a 30-yard shot which caromed off the crossbar. The ball ricocheted right to Garcia who knocked in the rebound of about five yards with 28:35 to play.
Butler definitely believed Sandell's goalkeeper prevented Nederland from romping to a much easier victory.
"My hat is off to their goalkeeper," the first-year Nederland coach said. "He's incredible. We pounded the goal. He made save after save. He's the real deal."
Murdock took a shot to the head in a second-half collision with Nederland's Roebuck and left the game with about 14 minutes to play. Sandell indicated the PN-G goalkeeper was treated and released for a concussion at Southeast Texas Medical Center.
"I was proud of how we defended them," Sandell said. "Their defense was equally good. Their marking backs, Austin Wyble and (Miles) Lawler played extremely well. Of those eight shots we had (on goal), we had to really fight to get those looks."
Nederland visits Beaumont Central on Friday night at 7 p.m. while PN-G goes to Bridge City on Friday night at 7 p.m.
