PORT ARTHUR —
Chris Beard, who served under both Bob Knight and Pat Knight at Texas Tech, is the new head basketball coach at Lamar State College-Port Arthur.
The announcement, ending the search for a replacement for Matt Cross, was to be made at a 2 p.m. press conference at the Parker Center.
Beard is a graduate of the University of Texas, with a BS in Kinesiology in 1995. He earned a Masters in Education from Abilene Christian University in 1998.
Beard played at Irving High School under Texas Hall of Fame school coach Mike Kunstadt from 1987-89, but finished at McCullough High in The Woodlands in 1991. After serving as an assistant to Bob Knight from 2001 to 2008 at Texas Tech, and being Pat Knight’s associate head coach at Tech from 2008 to 2011, he spent last season coaching the South Carolina Warriors of the American Basketball Association.
Prior to being hired by Bob Knight, he was head coach at Seminole State College in Oklahoma for one year (2000-2001), and produced a 26-6 record and a final national NJCAA ranking of No. 14. A year earlier, he’d been head coach at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. His team went 19-12.
From 1997 to 1999, Beard was an assistant at the University of North Texas. He got into coaching as a student assistant at the University of Texas from 1992-95, spent the 1995-96 season as a graduate assistant at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio and moved on to an assistant coaching position at Abilene Christian for the 1996-97 season.
Pat Knight was elated upon learning his former assistant had landed the Seahawks job.
“That’s great,” the LU coach said from Florida. “Chris is an excellent basketball coach and will do an outstanding job for them. Him getting the job is something that will benefit both Lamar State College and Lamar University. We needed to have a closer relationship with them and this will guarantee it.”
