Chiasson lifts PN-G to 38-4A title

NEDERLAND —  NEDERLAND -- Chloe Chiasson was labeled Wonder Woman with her picture in Friday's Port Arthur News. Obviously she lived up to her billing Friday night.

The Port Neches-Groves junior scored three times and the Lady Indians convincingly clinched their second straight District 38-4A girls soccer championship, defeating Nederland 3-1 at Bulldog Stadium.

It easily could have gone either way last year in the dispute for Mid-County female soccer supremacy. It's much more decisive this time because Chiasson has developed into a frequent and explosive scorer with many offensive weapons surrounding her.

Chloe scored goals 44, 45 and 46 for the season all in the first half, improving Aimee Bates' team record to 17-5 and 10-0. The Lady Indians play Bridge City and Beaumont Central in next week's two remaining regular-season games.

Nederland (13-3-1 and 8-2) could still finish even with PN-G in the standings if PN-G lost both of its remaining games and the Lady Bulldogs would defeat Central and Little Cypress-Mauriceville. But even in that unlikely event, PN-G would retain the advantage of a head-to-head sweep against their next-door neighbors.

How would 19-year Nederland girls head coach Julie Johnson describe PN-G's prolific goal-scorer? In a word, here's how Julie regarded Chloe -- "excellent."

In fact, the outstanding coach of 14 consecutive district championships, Johnson believes this may be PN-G's finest girls team ever in its 11 years of soccer.

"I think they have more weapons," Johnson said. "Aimee does a great job. They have a couple of players who can strike quickly and they did. We're still trying to find our quick strike. But we're working at it. We looked better offensively in the second half."

The Lady Bulldogs may have looked better but they trailed 3-0 and Johnson bemoaned her team's inability to convert "five opportunities in the first five minutes."

As for her ninth-year coaching counterpart, Bates merely replaced an all-state goalkeeper (Breanne Martin) with a homecoming queen who delivered three sensational saves Friday. Senior Tatum Crochet was superb in the net and her team's ball-control skills took care of the rest.

"I love my whole team," the PN-G coach said. "I was so happy with our ability to finish and score. Sometimes you can control the whole game and can't finish. Right now we're well-rounded and well-polished."

Chiasson opened the scoring just 5:35 into the game, taking a throw-in from Nederland's sideline, dribbling twice and connecting on about a 12-yard shot from in front of the net. Midway into the half, Chiasson struck again after Hayley Gerald dribbled toward the end line and did all the dirty work. Chiasson's second goal made it 2-0 with 21:06 left in the half.

The Lady Indians continued to apply the pressure on Big Ned keeper Bianca Garza as the half evaporated. Chiasson pounded in a short-range, worm-burner with 2:22 left in the half after Kelsey Miller did the dirty work.

Nederland answered with 26 minutes to play as Layken Richard scored off an assist from Lauren Washburn.

The purple shirts had intended to return home with a shutout. Instead, they had to settle for a 38-4A district title. That's a consolation prize they always gladly will accept.
