PORT ARTHUR — The Port Neches-Groves boys and Nederland girls, as expected, jumped out to leads on the opening day of the District 20-4A golf tournament at Bayou Din.

PN-G was 1-2 in the boys standings, with the “A” team shooting 304 and the “B” team close behind at 311. If they finish that way after today’s final 18 holes, it would be the third consecutive year for the Indians to claim the top two spots in team standings. Nederland is a distant third at 339.

On the girls side, Nederland, paced by Felicia Sauceda (82) and Shelbi Vincent (85), posted a 377 to lead Port Neches-Groves by 15 strokes and Little Cypress-Mauriceville by 25. Sauceda, however, was four strokes behind LC-M’s Brooke Brasseaux in her bid to win a third consecutive individual title.

Lonnie LaBove, last year’s 20-4A boys medalist, and freshman Braden Bailey led the way for the PN-G “A” team with one-over par 73s. Brandon Provost, playing on the PN-G “B” team was third in medalist standings with a 75.

PN-G, in fact, had the top six individual scores, with Tyler Rawson from the “A” team shooting a 77, Deny McDaniel from the “B” team firing a 77 and Drake Hernandez from the “B” team signing off on a 78. LC-M’s James Walker, with a 79, was the only other player to break 80.

Nederland’s boys were led by an 82 from Thaine Tillie and 84s from Trevor Smith and Hunter Huff.

Blaire Brevell helped PN-G stay with striking distance of Nederland on the girls side with an 89. Oxserio Benites backed her up with a 96.

The leaders on the girls side will tee off at 9:50 a.m. and 9:58 a.m. Thursday on the 10th hole of the Bayou Back. Boys leaders tee off at 9:50 a.m., 9;58 a.m.: and 10:06 a.m.: on the Links course. They will play the Links nine, then the Bayou Back.
