LAFAYETTE, LA. —
LAFAYETTE, La. — Lamar University will continue its long-standing rivalry with
Louisiana-Lafayette on Tuesday evening when the Cardinals travel to the
Cajundome for a 7 p.m. men’s basketball game.
This will be the 83rd meeting between the two schools with the series tied at 41
wins apiece. The Ragin’ Cajuns are Lamar’s second most common opponent
behind only McNeese State (92 meetings).
The game can be heard live in Beaumont
on KLVI 560 AM with Dave Hofferth providing the play-by-play.
Lamar brings a 1-7 record into the game after falling 72-39 at Purdue a week
ago. The Cardinals, who are playing their first 11 games on the road this
season, got 14 points and nine rebounds from senior forward Stan Brown against
the Boilermakers.
This will be the fifth straight year for Lamar and Louisiana-Lafayette to meet,
following a nine-year hiatus, with the two schools splitting the previous four
contests. Lamar won last year’s game 80-63 in Beaumont and last won in the
Cajundome in 2008 by a 78-68 margin.
Both Lamar and UL are giving up over 72 points per game on defense, but the
Cardinals are averaging only 54.0 points per game on offense, while the Cajuns
are scoring 69.0. The two teams are also grabbing right at 35 rebounds per game
and allowing nearly 40 to their opponents.
Brown is the only Cardinal scoring in double-figures, leading the team with 10.3
points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Redshirt freshman Rhon Mitchell is just behind
at 9.8 points per game and he is adding five rebounds per contest, as well.
Louisiana-Lafayette enters the game with a 3-6 record after falling 77-72 at
McNeese State on Saturday. The Ragin’ Cajuns are coached by Bob Marlin in his
third season with the school after 12 seasons with Southland Conference member
Sam Houston State.
