NATCHITOCHES, LA. —
Dominique Edwards registered her first career double-double as the Lamar Lady Cardinals held off Northwestern State 71-68 in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon.
Edwards, a sophomore transfer from Lon Morris College, finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds as Lamar (9-3 overall, 2-0 Southland) wrapped up its four-game road swing with a 3-1 mark.
Kalis Loyd had 20 points to once again lead the Lady Cardinals in scoring. The senior from Malmoe, Sweden, has been Lamar’s leading scorer in every game this season.
Lamar, which led 29-23 at halftime, led by as many as 12 points in the second half when Edwards drained two free throws to give LU a 52-40 edge with 8:31 remaining.
Northwestern State (5-7, 1-1) cut the Lamar lead to 69-66 with 8.1 seconds remaining, but Asia Booker hit two free throws with six seconds left to push the Lamar lead back up to five points. Janelle Perez hit two free throws with 1.3 seconds remaining for Northwestern State, but Lamar was able to run out the clock.
Ayers and Carenn Baylor added nine points apiece for Lamar. Loyd had a game-high nine assists, while Ayers had four assists and Baylor had five steals.
Lamar returns home for three straight Southland Conference games starting with a 5:30 p.m. Monday encounter with Southeastern Louisiana. All three games will be the opening contest of a hoops doubleheader with the Lamar men’s basketball team.
“It’s nice to get two conference wins on the road,” Tidwell said. “Now we have to take care of business at home.”
