PORT ARTHUR —
On Tuesday, Port Arthur Memorial head football coach Kenny Harrison was named to the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Board of Directors, while attending organization’s yearly convention and coaching school in San Antonio.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity to bring some exposure to our kids and the community of Port Arthur,” Harrison said. “It was surprising, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
The board consists of 25 members from eight regions around the state., a president, a president-elect, an executive director and an assistant executive director.
Harrison will be representing Region 5 along with six other coaches.
Harrison was nominated Tuesday at the organization’s meeting along with six others. Then, all the members voted, and Harrison and two others found themselves elected to the board.
“It’ll involve some decision-making, talking about different rules governing all high school sports, not just football,” Harrison said. “We’ll have input, and help out with decisions.”
Don Price, then of Hamshire-Fannett, was the only Southeast Texas coach represented on the board last year. Price is still serving, though he is now the head coach at C.E. King.
The honor for Harrison comes on the heels of Fox Sports Southwest’s announcement Tuesday that it would be bringing its Friday Night Experience to the Memorial vs. Beaumont West Brook game in Week 9.
“That’s great,” Harrison said. “The more exposure our kids can get, the better. They work extremely hard and deserve to be recognized and have people notice them a little.”
Last season, the pregame show came to Mid-County Madness at the Reservation. The roving show visits key matchups across the state starting in Week Zero. This will be the show’s only stop in Southeast Texas this season.
