Nederland adds three new coaches

NEDERLAND — A flurry of coaching changes happened at Nederland this summer. Three new coaches have been hired, including two head coaches, for the 2012-2013 season.

Anna Benefield will be the new girl's basketball coach for the Lady Bulldogs, taking over for Chris Smith who was reassigned within the district. Will Mallette has been hired as the new softball coach, taking over for interim coach Monte Barrow.

Finally, football assistant Cody Robbins, who coached running backs, will be the new ninth grade head coach with Michael Broussard coming over from Lumberton to take his spot.

Benefield was an assistant with Orangefield last year and has previous head coaching experience as Deweyville's volleyball boss. She also coached the cross country team last year with Orangefield.

The Orangefield basketball team under head coach Chris Jost went 115-51 in the past five seasons, including a playoff appearance every year. Jost took a head coaching job with Marble Falls back in May.

Mallette is coming off a very impressive stint at Deweyville, including a 92-43 record in five seasons, including back to back district championships in 2010 and 2011. He will be the fourth head coach the Nederland softball team has had in the past three seasons.

Broussard comes over from Lumberton, where he served as quarterbacks coach. He was previously on Darrell Barbay's staff at Anahuac as an assistant coach.

Robbins will continue to be the head baseball coach and was moved to the post as ninth grade head coach after some staff shuffling following Jack Lynch's retirement.
