LONGVIEW, WASH. — Just as it was when they were 14, the Nederland 15-year-old All-Stars were defeated and eliminated by Tallhassee, Fla. in the semifinals of the Babe Ruth World Series, losing 6-2 on Thursday night.
Florida jumped on Texas right from the start, scoring one in the second and then posting three runs in the third for an early 4-0 lead.
Nederland did not get on the board until the top of the sixth when trailing 5-0. The 15s scraped for two runs on two hits to cut the game to 5-2. But Tallahassee responded with an insurance run in the bottom half to really shut the door on Nederland.
Florida's Michael Ware dominated Texas hitters. He went all seven innings to earn the victory, allowing just four hits and fanned nine batters.
Meanwhile, Nederland's Kohl Lasell had some struggles against the unbeaten Tallahassee squad, as he only lasted two innings before surrendering the hill to Trent Fontenot who went the duration of the contest. Both pitchers had trouble locating their pitches, as Florida benefitted from five free passes.
Overall, Fontenot faired a little better than Kohl, who earned a two-inning save on Wednesday night.
Fontenot allowed two runs on two hits in four innings and struck out three. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Lasell and Nederland teammate Stephen Schlett were responsible for the 15s other two hits.
Schlett was 1-for-3 with a two-out single to centerfield that scored Fontenot and Port Neches-Groves Daniel Sparrow, who drew a walk with one out. Fontenot followed with a single up the middle, which moved Sparrow to second. Both players advanced one station after a passed ball, setting up Schlett for his two RBIs.
