PORT ARTHUR —
Despite not getting his name called in Thursday’s NBA draft, it appears Memorial ex J’Covan Brown will still get a shot with an NBA team. And not just any NBA team, but the world champion Miami Heat.
Brown, according to an ESPN.com report, will play for the Heat’s team in the Las Vegas Summer League. A strong performance there could earn the Texas Longhorn standout a free agent contract to go to training camp with LeBron James and company.
It’s welcome news for the 6-2 Brown, after watchng 60 players, including21 guards, taken in the draft. The Big 12’s leading scorer had been hopeful of being selected in the second round, but reports during draft week suggested his chances were slim.
Reasons given that he might not get drafted were showing up at the NBA’s draft combine overweight and not displaying enough quickess. Sports Illustrated published a consensus overview of six NBA GM’s on Brown that said:
“He hurt himself as much as anybody in Chicago. He came in heavy and slow. He makes baskets, but I don’t know who he is. He’s a non-athlete. He did a good job for Rick Barnes this year with all those freshmen, so I give him credit for that.”
Brown now has the opportunity to make the GM’s who contributed to the report eat their words. Most of the players taken over him in the NBA draft will be playing in Las Vegas. Participating NBA clubs put together teams consisting of draftees, free agents, second-year players and middle-of-the road veterans.
Miami’s team will play five games from July 15 through July 21. Most of the games will be shown on NBA TV. — BOB WEST
