BEAUMONT —
BEAUMONT — Par took the expected beating in the opening round of the Adams Tour Pro Series Beaumont Open.
With Chris Walling setting the pace with a sizzling 8-under-63 at Beaumont Country Club, a total of 33 players posted numbers better than 71. Included was the area foursome of Andrew Landry (67, T11), BCC pro Rob Lietzke (67, T11), Michael Arnaud (68, T20) and Anthony Broussard (69, T25).
Also in red figures, all at 70, was the former Lamar trio of LeRoux Ferreira, Casey Clendenon and Hugues Joannes. Defending champion Brian Rowell was in an 71, while another former Beaumont Open champ, Brian Rowell, the leading money on the Adams Tour this year, carded a 69.
The par-breaking included two 64s, a trio of 65s, eleven 66s and nine 67s.
On day two, everybody will be chasing Walling, who was playing in only his fourth Adams Tour event of 2012. The 28-year-old from Lake Charles smoked the front nine with a 6-under-29 that included birdies at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5, No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9. He added incoming birdies at 14 and 15 in what was a bogey-free round.
Landry, who went from PN-G to Lamar to the University of Arkansas, started slowly with an even-par 35 on the front, then got rolling with an eagle on the par-5, 11th. He added birdies at 14 and 15 to tour the back in 37.
Lietzke, the nephew of former PGA Tour star Bruce Lietzke, showed he knows how to play his home course by rolling in an eagle at 11 and birdies at 7-8-13-15 and 16 to offset bogeys at 2, 10 and 18. His nines were 34-33.
Arnaud had four birdies (3-9-11-14) and one bogey (4) in shooting 34-34.
Broussard, meanwhile, had one of the days wildest rounds, starting bogey, double bogey enroute to his 69. He got it going in the right direction by holing his second shot from the fairway on the par-4, 3rd for an eagle. After a bogey at 4, he finished with 10 pars and birdies at 5-6-12 and 16.
Landry, Arnaud and Broussard tee off on No. 10 today at 8:40 a.m.
