PORT NECHES —
Spring break is upon local teams, but there’s still plenty of action on the local softball diamonds. In fact, Tuesday will see the first of two scheduled Mid-County Madness matchups.
Port Neches-Groves and Nederland will square off at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Port Neches in another early-season district clash for the two squads. Nederland has already played two of the three 20-4A playoff teams from last season and is 1-1 so far.
The Lady Bulldogs (14-6, 2-1) fell 7-1 to 2012 state semifinalist Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Friday after beating Livingston earlier in the week. Raven Cole struck out 13 for LC-M to pick up the victory, while MaKayla Kelly struck out six in six innings of work for Nederland.
The Lady Bulldogs also knocked off 2012 playoff team Vidor 16-3 to open district play on Feb. 26. Nederland currently sits a game out of first place, behind LC-M.
PN-G (11-7, 2-1) bounced back from a 7-2 loss of its own to LC-M last Tuesday to beat Beaumont Central 15-0. The Lady Indians are tied with Nederland, a game back of LC-M and in playoff position once again.
The two teams split the regular season series last year, with PN-G beating Nederland 9-5 at the Reservation, after the Lady Indians scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Nederland won the second matchup 4-0 thanks to two home runs by Emily Nolan, who is now playing at Louisiana State University-Eunice.
Port Arthur Memorial continued its district schedule on Monday at North Shore. The Lady Titans lost 22-0 to Deer Park to open district play last Tuesday.
