HOUSTON – Nederland head coach Brian English had to travel a bit to pick up his 250th career victory, but his Nederland team obliged with a season-opening 54-47 victory over Houston St. Pius X.
Nederland led 31-18 at halftime and withstood a furious comeback by St. Pius to give English his milestone. The Bulldogs will host Hardin-Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Dog Dome.
Lady Titans beat Gal.Ball
The Port Arthur Memorial girls basketball team scored 22 points in the second quarter to shoot past Galveston Ball 61-44 Tuesday at Memorial Gym.
Dorcieve Davis led the Lady Titans with 16 points while Joyce Kennerson added 12 and Ariel Hutchinson scored 11. Davis, a senior, will sign with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday morning at the high school.
Memorial (2-0) will play next in the Nederland tournament, facing Lumberton on Thursday.
Indians fall to Silsbee
PORT NECHES – PN-G held a halftime lead over the Silsbee Tigers, but couldn’t close them out, as Silsbee beat the Indians 60-48 at the PN-G Competition Gym on Tuesday.
Silsbee’s Danti Wilson led all scorers with 18 points while teammate Austin Jenkins had 13.
PN-G’s A.J. Smith led the Indians with 17 points.
PN-G (0-1) will play at Barbers Hill at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Ozen beats Memorial boys
The Port Arthur Memorial boys opened the 2012-2013 season with a loss, falling 65-52 to Beaumont Ozen Tuesday.
The Titans (0-1) will host Lumberton at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
