Dayton rolls over Texas City

LaPorte -- When you mix good offense with good defense it usually will do wonders for a football team. Once again it was the Dayton offense pilling up big numbers and then the Bronco "D" was stuffing 1,700 yard rusher Johnny Thomas all night long, as Dayton advanced to the regional quarterfinal Friday night with a 42-10 victory over Texas City in a Region III Division playoff game at Bulldog stadium.

Dayton (9-3), will next face Livingston, which advanced Friday with a 42-7 victory over Houston Washington.

It was Texas City who actually drew first blood. Following a Bronco fumble on their first play from scrimmage it was Mitch Russo connecting on a 30-yard field goal. After going three-and-out on there second possession the Dayton offense finally settled down and put some points on the board.

Taking over at their own 23-yard line the Broncos marched 77-yards on 13 plays. Charles hit A.J. Dugat from 19-yards and a 7-3 Dayton lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff it was the Broncos getting a gift from the Stingarees as Victor Blanco recovered a fumble for Dayton at the Texas City 13-yard line. After a bad pitch on 2nd and 10 the Broncos were looking at a 3rd and 20 from the Stingaree 23-yard line. Charles then connected with Ronnie Powell from 23-yards to up the lead to 14-3.

Once again it was the Dayton defense setting the offense up in great field position as Texas City was forced to punt from deep in their own end zone. Taking over at the Stingaree 44-yard line, it was Dayton covering the distance on seven plays as Charles hit Dugat from 12-yards out to make it 21-3 with 8:05 remaining in the second quarter.

The Broncos would add to there lead thanks to some trickery as Dugat took a pitch and passed to Powell from 23-yards on a halfback pass to make it 28-3 Dayton with 5:07 remaining in the first half.

Texas City (10-2), would cut into the Bronco lead late in the third quarter as Daniel Herrera stepped in front of a Charles pass and returned it to the Dayton 49-yard line. Blake Apffel finally got the Stingarees in the end zone on a one yard run to cut the lead to 28-10.

Dayton then put together their best drive of the season early in the fourth quarter by marching 99-yards on 12 plays to put the game out of reach. Charles threw his fourth touchdown pass of the night as he connected with Paul Fontenot from 26-yards out to make it 35-10.

John Gable then added the final points of the night for the Broncos by going in from 10-yards late in the contest to cap off a 85-yard, eight play drive.

For the night Dayton finished with 464-yards of offense and 25 first downs. Charles finished 19 of 40 passing for 247 yards. Gable lead the Broncos on the ground with 70-yards on 11 carries while Charles added 56-yards.

Dugat did a little of everything on this night. The junior finished with nine receptions for 102-yards while adding the touchdown pass to Powell. He also added 68-yards rushing and returned an interception 42-yards on the defensive side of the ball. Powell added six catches for 92-yards and booted six P.A.T kicks.
