Terry guides Mavs, 96-86, by Rockets

HOUSTON – Jason Terry obviously welcomed coming off the Dallas Mavericks bench, while too many Rockets seemed to belong on their bench.

Night after night, Houston always seems to bring out the best in the Dallas guard. Terry shot his jersey number Wednesday night at Toyota Center, delivering a game-high 31 points in 34 minutes and sparking the Mavs to a sweep of a three-game road trip with a 96-86 victory over the Rockets.

Winless in four Dallas home appearances, the Mavericks improved to 5-7 and seemed to be buying into the team concept of first-year head coach Rick Carlisle’s new system.

Meanwhile the 7-5 Rockets thoroughly frustrated their coach Rick Adelman on this frigid shooting night and looked quite fragile and uninspired.

Although they cling to a slim NBA Southwest Division lead, the Rockets began to resemble a house of cards in this nationally televised ESPN affair.

Yao Ming wore a beige sport coat and a pair of blue jeans. Tracy McGrady wore a grimace with considerable knee pain. Ron Artest wore a complete look of confusion after resorting to way too much one-on-one activity.

As for Adelman, he shook his head about McGrady’s limited medical allowance of 30 on-court minutes as well as his team’s 37.2 shooting percentage. The Rockets never appeared to be inspired at all on either end of the floor. That flat defensive performance allowed Dallas to shoot 45.5 percent and to outrebound the shorter home team, 46-40.

“We didn’t have good movement and if we did get shots, we didn’t make them,” Adelman said. “We had a bad first half on defense and a bad second half on offense. We just didn’t play well enough to win this game.”

It starts with Yao and his left foot which required extensive off-season surgery to repair a fracture. The foot caused the 7-6 center to wince in pain during Monday night’s game at Oklahoma City. The Rockets want to study the results of a bone scan which was taken on Yao’s foot Tuesday.

How serious is this? Yao will tell you that it’s nothing and he will return in two or three days.

“He just wants to be careful,” said Andy Yao of the Rockets basketball operations staff. “But I’m very scared. It’s the same foot that bothered him last season.”

McGrady’s knee is every bit as fragile as Yao’s foot. T-Mac had 16 points but only one rebound and one assist in 29 minutes. Team doctors limited his playing time to 30 minutes max and it really fouled up any continuity that Adelman could attempt to establish.

“It’s just something we have to live with right now,” the Rockets coach said. “It’s tough on him… tough on our game… and it’s hard for him to come back after we sit him down. I thought we were discombobulated and way out of sync.

“It’s definitely affected him. We’ve just got to find a solution to all of this. You have to flow into stuff. We did it in practice but tonight it was all sporadic.”

McGrady simply is not moving well enough on his left knee. That’s all there is to it. Shane Battier returned to practice with the team on Tuesday but has yet to be activated. The Rockets may have to shelve McGrady for awhile, but they would like for Battier to return before they reach such a decision on McGrady.

Once Dallas jumped out 8-0 in this game, the Houston effort seemed to contain more perspiration than inspiration. Nobody took over the game without Yao. McGrady and Rafer Alston led the point parade with 16 apiece, followed by vastly improved speedster Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola with 15 and a rather clueless Artest at 14.

When Terry was not doing the damage with his 31 points, steady all-pro Dirk Nowitzki was chipping in 24 points and 12 rebounds. After Terry was done, he was able to simplify his approach to the media.

“Whether I’m starting or coming off the bench, I’m going to do whatever it takes for the team,” Terry said. “We’re hanging our hat on being ready to play and we’ve done that.”

Not all the Mavericks stars have maintained that approach under their new coach. Jerry Stackhouse has left the team and has gone back to North Carolina for the present time. Another thorn in the Rockets’ side, Dallas swingman Josh Howard was deactivated due to a left ankle injury.

With the Rockets’ house of cards, though, Dallas still discovered a way to get the job done with 10 points to spare.

    Matt Cross wondered Wednesday whether Lamar Port Arthur’s basketball team had enough healthy players available to face Kilgore College.
    The Lamar State program literally was falling apart before head coach Cross’ eyes. The game clock didn’t work. The players were dropping like Lakeshore mosquitoes.
    Point guard Derrick Dawkins had crutches after sustaining a knee injury Saturday. Wing man Elton Roy missed last Saturday’s game with a knee sprain. Opposite wing Eldridge Moore was hobbled by an ankle sprain. Power man Jayon James was sick with bronchitis. Post man Elijah Pittman seemed out of sorts too.
    “I’m only about 75 percent,” said the Seahawks third-year coach after canceling a lunch appointment.
    It got worse at the start of this 75-50 victory in Carl Parker Center before life improved any on the good ship Seahawk.
    Playmaker deluxe Brandon Peters said he was “hit in the mouth” by a Kilgore player’s shoulder.
    “I’m going to have to go to the dentist tomorrow morning,” Peters said, shaking his head. “The guy knocked my teeth all the way back.”
    Battered and beaten to a pulp, the Seahawks (especially Peters) proved that basketball definitely is played above the shoulders, too.
    More than anything else, Lamar State simply relaxed and rebounded. And rebounded some more.
    The Seahawks crashed the boards in a way that they have not pounded them in a couple of weeks. They knocked home seven three-pointers and welcomed a special addition to their star of the game show. Lamar State College-Port Arthur, meet Lakeem Duncan.
    “We asked one person to step up in practice with Derrick going to the doctor tomorrow (Thursday) and Lakeem did,” his head coach Cross said.
    Duncan led the way with 16 points and backcourt buddy Shondel Stewart added 15. Peters changed jerseys (to 32 from his usual 23) after losing blood from being hit in the mouth. Peters had 11 points and 8 boards. Roy patiently treated his wounded knee all weekend with ice and also scored 11. Bum ankle or not, Moore managed 10 boards and 8 points.
    And a clean shaven head coach smiled afterwards after every one in Seahawk Nation told him that his team needed to rebound better. After Trinity Valley outrebounded Lamar State by seven on Saturday, the Seahawks returned to work and captured the backboard battle on this night, 33-22.
    “I thought we rebounded the ball well consistently,” Cross said. “We’re still No. 1 in our conference and if we can get everybody healthy, we can still have a very good chance to defend our championship.”
    Parker Center’s game clock has been malfunctioning for the past three home games and it had a way of really dictating a lot about this game. The game officials had to frequently counsel Kilgore head coach Brian Hoberecht about the clock and its unpredictable nature.
    A very good indicator of Seahawks prosperity arrived eight minutes into this one when Roy penetrated on a weave and dished out to Moore in the left corner. The 6-5 sophomore knocked home a three-pointer for a 15-8 Lamar State lead. Kilgore never got within five points the rest of the game.
    Another telltale moment developed right before the half when Roy missed a jumper, but followed his own shot on a layup to give the Seabirds a 36-19 cushion. Kilgore never got closer than 10 after that.
    Lamar State (18-5 and 10-2) will welcome all the support in Baytown that it can receive on Saturday night. The Seahawks visit Lee College that night at 7:30 p.m.
