Nederland capsule: Bulldog running back Kendrick Hopkins continues to churn out 100-yard games, but is still 100 yards behind both Vidor’s Montana Quirante and LC-M’s Alex Sezer in the District 20-4A rushing leaders. Hopkins has 729 yards and two TDs while Quirante has 823 yards and 13 TDs while Sezer has 846 yards and 11 TDs. … Right tackle Dannis Latiolais returned to the lineup for Nederland last week while Justin Byrd continues his solid play at left tackle. … The Nederland defense is averaging 16.7 points allowed per game. Last season, the Bulldog defense allowed 16.2 points per game during the regular season. The offense is averaging 29.1 points per game, which is almost two points better than the 2011 average of 27.8. … Hopkins’ longest run of the season this year was a 46-yarder against Livingston. Last season in Mid-County Madness, Nederland’s Troy Benjamin broke an 84-yard run, his longest of the season.
PN-G capsule: Last week’s 56-50 loss to Beaumont Central was the first time PN-G scored 50 or more points since beating Lumberton 57-10 last season. It was the first time the Indians gave up 50 points in a game since losing 56-46 to Manvel in the third round of the 2010 playoffs. … PN-G will be without two more defensive starters this week while welcoming back another. Both linebacker Logan Warlick and defensive end Chris Mangini were hurt against Central and will not play Friday. The Indians will get linebacker Dillard Youngblood back, however, with Robert Dawson moving over to take Warlick’s spot. Dawson led the Indians with 10 tackles last week. Ben Hodges will move into the starting lineup for Mangini. … Sophomore quarterback Ky Walker will also be back on the field Friday, but not at quarterback. His thumb is still not fully healed, but he will be able to play cornerback at times to help with depth on the Indian defense. … Also being replaced in the lineup is H-back Reece Wardlow, because of an injury he suffered. Deny McDaniel, fresh off catching the two-point conversion that put PN-G up 50-49 last week, will start in his place.
Neumann said: “I am confident we will get to where we need to be, but we’re not there yet. Our goal is to win the games we play and we’ve got a giant one this week against a great rival. A lot of our guys have played in this game for two or three years, which is a good thing. Their quarterback can throw the ball and run. He’s a real weapon. Jeremiah Rose is a great receiver. Not only can he create separation between himself and the cornerback, but he can also break tackles. Clopton is a great pass catcher and it seems like he’s always open. Their running back is hard to tackle at times. Their defense also stunted a lot against Central, so we have to be prepared for that.”
Faircloth said: “They are very consistent on offense. They haven’t put up a whole lot of points, but they don’t need to. Coach Neumann plays to the strength of his team. They can be conservative in some areas, punt it back and send the big boys out there. They’re smart in what they do. They scheme you real well and they know what they’re doing. They have made some big plays. Their play action passing game makes it tough on you. Carson being a senior quarterback helps there, too.”
